Weed plants are “aromatic plants”, which means that they usually give off a strong smell. With some varieties this smell can also be noticed in the neighbourhood. Although the amount of smell differs per variety the plants will never be completely odourless. The aroma can vary from a very strong weed smell to a fresh and fruity aroma. For most people, weed is a very recognisable smell.
The intensity differs not only per variety but also depends on the period within the total cultivation period. At the beginning of the growing period the smell will be less, at the end the smell will be much more intense. Whatever aroma the plant has, you want to make sure that it doesn’t attract attention and cause a nuisance to the environment. Fortunately, there are a number of ways of counteracting nuisance.
Prevent strong weed smell during cultivation
Odour nuisance is mainly caused by indoor cultivation. This is mainly due to a lack of air circulation. On the one hand, you want to keep the air inside as much as possible and on the other hand, you want to discharge the air slowly and unnoticeably into the open air. Unless it is a large quantity of plants in a residential area you will cause little nuisance with outdoor growing. In outdoor areas the smell can spread well into the air so there will be no problems. Keep in mind that the smell will increase during the growing process, also when harvesting, the smell will become stronger.
Preventing and limiting nuisance
Air freshener: You can hide the smell cheaply with scents and perfume, you can also burn incense. Don’t spray too much with chemicals, it’s not so good for the airways.
Cooking with flavour: A temporary but tasty solution is to cook with aromatic scents to mask the weed smell. Maybe offer the neighbours a pan now and then?
Carbon filters: If you want to grow seriously and for a long time, the use of active carbon filters is recommended. The amount of filters you need depends on the surface area. Carbon filters play an important role when you want to harvest well indoors.
Ventilation system: Whatever methods you use, it is better not to start without a good ventilation system. Take a good look at the circumstances, the possibilities and limitations in your personal situation.
Legal: Safety first, make sure that if you are growing medicinally, you either have a PGMS pass or a government exemption or a medical certificate from a doctor, and remember that it is important that you have new equipment with a European certificate and not second-hand products.
