Can anyone grow cannabis?

Many people are afraid that growing cannabis is illegal by definition, or that it is just very complicated. Rest assured, because of the tolerance policy that is in force in the Netherlands, you are allowed to privately possess five weed plants. What’s more, growing cannabis is not that difficult if you use the right materials and follow the instructions. A third advantage is that you can be sure that you are smoking a natural product without any unknown additives. There are also species that are easy to grow outdoors.

Grow indoors or outdoors?

Based on your own preference and situation, you can choose to grow indoors or outdoors. Outdoors you always have the least control when it comes to conditions, like sunlight, precipitation and temperature. Indoors you have more control with a greater chance of success. For beginners it is advisable to do the first grow indoors.

What you need to start

Growing cannabis is not that difficult, but it does require a few things. Let’s keep it simple and start with the basics.

Cannabis seeds: The choice of seeds is probably the most important choice you will make during the whole process. The quality must be optimal, otherwise you run the risk of plants dying prematurely or not fully flowering. Always buy cannabis seeds from a seed bank you can trust.

Cultivation medium: This is not a psychic gardener, the cultivation medium is the soil on which the plants are grown. This can be soil, but also coconut or hydro. There are many suitable types of substrate, each with their own characteristics. Compare the pros and cons of each growing medium beforehand.

Growing nutrients: A cannabis plant is a living organism, so make sure you have the right nutrition. You need two types of nutrition: one for growing and one for blooming. Because there are so many brands and products you may not be able to see the wood for the trees. You also have to take into account the right dosage. Ask your growshop for advice on the most suitable products.

Light: If you want to grow indoors you will need controlled light to mimic daylight in the house. The lighting is usually the biggest investment, although beginners can start with some cheaper models to save on costs.
